Preparation before ultrasound examination

Fasting: Cats need to fast for a period of time before undergoing ultrasound examination, usually recommended to fast for 8 to 12 hours. This is because food in the stomach or intestines can interfere with imaging of other organs, resulting in poor visualization and inaccurate results. Meanwhile, fasting also helps to reduce the amount of gas in the gastrointestinal tract, minimizing interference with ultrasound sound waves.

Sedation: Although most ultrasound examinations do not require sedation, some cats may require mild sedation to remain calm during the examination, especially when they are anxious or uncooperative. Performing ultrasound scans under sedation is advantageous as it can relax abdominal muscles and help stabilize diseased animals. However, it should be noted that fasting can reduce the risk of inhaling gastric contents during sedation, which may lead to serious complications such as pneumonia.

Shaving and coupling agent: Before ultrasound examination, it is necessary to shave the cat's abdominal hair and use coupling agent to reduce the gap between the transducer surface and the skin for better ultrasound examination.
