The pregnancy, litter size, fetal development, backfat and eye muscle area of ewe can be detected by animal B-ultrasound in sheep farm.
Method/procedure
1.The operator held the B-ultrasound machine on the left side of the ewe, and scanned with a 3.5Mhz abdominal probe.
2.Before scanning, the hair will be partially shaved to show the best images, the coupling will be applied around the goat's abdomen, the probe will be gently pressed against the abdomen and moved towards the bladder. Sonograms are stored as digital pictures.
3.On an ultrasound scanner, images of the embryo, fetus, uterus, and bone appear white (hyperechoic/echoic), the placenta gray (isoechoic/hypoechoic), and the amniotic membrane and uterine cavity appear black (hypoechoic/anechoic).
4.The length of the fetus is measured from the forehead to the base of the tail or the crown of the head to the heart and then the heart to the base of the tail. Ultrasound was used to observe embryo and fetal growth during each gestation period, on days 14 to 20 of the third trimester, followed by days 30 and 35. Measurements were then taken at days 60, 75, and 90 of the second trimester and at days 120 and 145 of the third trimester.
The early detection of pregnancy is of considerable economic value to the sheep industry. Non-pregnant ewes can be sold, thus reducing feed costs, while non-pregnant lambs can be sold at a higher price than adult ewes. Dividing the flock into pregnant and non-pregnant ewes may reduce breeding and production losses in the form of miscarriages, stillbirths and weak lamb births.
Foetal number forecasting will allow for proper nutritional management of ewe late in pregnancy to prevent pregnancy toxemia, minimize prenatal feeding costs, optimise birth weight, weaning weight and survival of lambs, and reduce the incidence of dystocia. In addition, accurate information about the stage of gestation will help dry lactating females at appropriate times and monitor females in the near future.
